In Memorium: Chuck Rudolph We are saddened to report that Chuck Rudolph, one of our most beloved members, passed away on January 27, 2024. Chuck joined the Rotary Club of Denver Mile High in February 1990 and remained an active member until his death. He was a mentor to new members, encouraging them to get engaged in Club projects quickly. He loved creating new projects, recruiting partners, and added vision and energy. And no location was too far to visit. Chuck created and nurtured the Club’s interest in international grants, which is part of his legacy to our Club. |

An Evening with T.R. Reid on the American Tax SystemDo Americans pay more tax or less than citizens of other rich democracies? (Answer: far less.) Could our tax system be fairer? Could it be simpler? (Answers: Yes, and Yes.) World Denver and Denver Mile High Rotary join to bring you an evening with one of the nation’s best known journalists: T. R. Reid who will discuss what he learned about how the US Tax system compares with other countries. His latest book- A Fine Mess: A Global quest for a Simpler, Fairer and More Efficient Tax Code- is designed to give Americans useful ideas as we embark on a national debate about tax reform (and will be available for sale and signing at the event). The current code is desperately in need of reform, and Reid’s book is an illuminating and even entertaining tour of how taxes are done in countries from Mexico to Estonia, the Czech Republic to New Zealand. Reid finds many models for taxation that show how the process can be made comprehensible and equitable. Join us and bring your friends to what will most assuredly be and informative and engaging evening! |

Media Advisory - Food for ThoughtMEDIA ADVISORY
Food Bags Fight Weekend Hunger, Preparing Kids for Learning
WHAT: Denver Mile High Rotary has partnered with Food for Thought – Denver to fill weekend food bags for 375 Harrington Elementary School students during the school year, preparing the students to come to school Monday morning ready to learn. New this year, a select group of 4th graders is learning the value of service to others from role models by participating in packing food bags for their classmates.
WHO: Denver Mile High Rotary, Food for Thought, Colorado Access, and Harrington Elementary Students
WHERE: Harrington Elementary School, 2401 E. 37th Avenue, Denver, CO 80205
WHEN: Friday, September 25 from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m.
HOW: Food For Thought, Denver Mile High Rotary, and Colorado Access have teamed up to help solve the weekend childhood hunger problem in Denver. With Denver Mile High Rotary Club as a civic partner and Colorado Access as a corporate partner, Food For Thought has launched Harrington Elementary as a model school for future growth for the program. Each organization is lending important components: financial, volunteer, and organizational support.
WHY: 96% of Harrington Elementary students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch, and during the week, children in low-income families rely on federally-funded school breakfast and lunch programs as their main nutritional meals. On the weekends, substantive meals set the stage to help them learn; however, these children do not get enough to eat. Every Friday during the school year, volunteers fill PowerSacks of food for children to take home – enough nutritional food to feed a family of four. By providing a PowerSack to each child in the school each week, we hope to assure that no child goes hungry over the weekend, and is ready to learn Monday morning.

DMHR Kicks Off New School Year at Harrington ElementaryDenver Mile High Rotary Club is proud to kick off the new school year at Harrington Elementary School with the 2nd year of our Food for Thought program - where we pack 375 bags of food for the kids to take home to share with their families over the weekend. Recognizing a "need to feed" in our own community, DHMR's Local Community Service has prioritized this program with both funds (every dollar spent goes to purchasing food) and volunteers (8 Rotarians meet each Friday during the school year to pack and distribute the food bags directly to classrooms; we also partner with other organizations such as Colorado Access to make quick work of the task...and enjoy coffee afterwards in the school library sponsored by a local church!)

Nicaragua Water and Sanitation ProjectsA visit to Nicaragua was made by District 5450 Rotarians and interested parties. Rotarians were Charles Rudolph and Bob Kemp of Denver Mile High Rotary and by Dr. Scott Nelson of Boulder Rotary Club. There were a total of 6 people in our group including two significant partners of Rotarians.
One of our party was a civil engineer, Mark Van Nostrand, who is a volunteer with Boulder Valley Friendship Cities Association which is working on a separate Global Grant for Water and Sanitation in Northern Nicaragua in concert with Boulder Valley Rotary. Mark wanted to compare his project’s practices with ours as well as to gain some knowledge of the area and problems.
Our trip included hosting Managua Rotary Club representatives to lunch, visiting their club meeting, and also by making a social visit to another Nicaraguan Rotary club, Rotary Club Ciudad Sandino.
